MAJOR PROJECTS
Aircraft Project:
Without any experience with interfacing computers to external devices,
I designed,
programmed, and tested a significant portion
of a system that interfaced to turbo prop engines for a Bell Aircraft project, the Osprey.
The system used an HP1000 computer to collect raw data from the Flight
Control Computer, the turbo prop engines, and diagnostic equipment attached
to the engines. The HP1000 then at request from the host computer (Digital VAX /
VMS Mini-Computer) sent the data for further processing. Communications
to this host computer was also a responsibility that was shared with a
three person team from my company and two from General Electric. The programs
were written offsite with little or no documentation or assistance
and installed, tested, and successfully integrated into the sections on
site at General Electric.
Manufacturing System I:
While employed in Bennington, Vermont by a manufacturing company that produced
fuel tubing and other machined parts for the Aircraft Industry, I designed
and implemented a database system to track parts, purchase orders and sales
orders for the company. Prior to this system, all records were on paper
and mistakes were made when incorrect orders were placed. After installing
the system, the efficiency improved dramatically. The Corporation
was purchased by another manufacturer in another state and closed.
Manufacturing System II:
At Control Designs Corporation I was assigned to a project that was previously
designed by another programmer, but had failed to be successful. With dislike
for the system by the employees of the client company (GTE Sylvania) due
to the errors on it, I was able to collect the data from the light bulb
assembly lines with accuracy and efficiency. The system was successful
in its task and the troubles worked out. The data was 100% accurate, even
without any formal handshaking between the HP1000 and the line computers.
Recreational Systems:
At Control Designs Corporation I was responsible for designing,
implementing, and
maintaining two systems to calculate charges
to customers in Billiard Rooms, and Bowling Centers that sold world
wide. The company had to let go all other programmers including my two
supervisors, who were employed prior to myself. I continued with the company
and also learned more about electronics until further economic conditions
caused the complete reduction of personnel including the vice-president
who now works for another company.
Self-Taught Languages:
At Control Designs Corporation, my supervisors had decided that the two
systems for Bowling and Billiard were to be programmed using Microsoft
C. I had no prior knowledge of 'C', but in one week had started programming
the Billiard System. One month later, the Test Version was ready and running
on an IBM Compatible computer(MS-DOS). Once again, interfacing with external
devices was a critical portion of this system.
A prior version of the Bowling system was designed by a previous programmer
using Forth, so I also had to learn that language, although the design
was dropped a week or so later.
I am currently working on Visual Basic, Java and also Microsoft Visual J++.
Self Employment Record:
Having the ability to work on my own without supervision, I was able to
maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction in the period of 1984
through to the present. I have received to date, only one complaint from
a customer in all these years. I have repaired most any brand of computer
including Apple and IBM compatible machines. I have received, several times,
extra payment when presenting the invoice to the customer.
Summary:
In contrast with the Aircraft Project, with the Recreational Projects,
I was the only programmer working on this system. This shows my ability
to work alone or on a team project. It also shows my ability to learn quickly
and adapt to current environments. I have had no formal training in electronics
or interfacing with complex systems such as with the Aircraft Project and
the Recreational Projects, but successfully performed my duties quickly
and efficiently.
Learning 'C', a new environment and operating system(HP1000), assembly
language on MS-DOS computers, and Forth on MS-DOS computers shows my ability
to learn new languages and operating systems in a short time. Working on
systems designed by other programmers shows my ability to interface with
other programmers and their programming styles.
At each company I have been employed at, I have put in every extra effort
to accomplish my duties. I have stayed late after hours, without compensation,
willingly, to get the job done. I have an extremely high interest in computers
and enjoy working with them. I have offered much training and expertise
to other employees and helped them acquire their own computer skills. I
have subscribed to several computer magazines in order to maintain my knowledge
of other systems and new products.
